Militaristic observations (2)
May. 24th, 2003 03:16 amHuman beings are conservative bunch.
One new idea at time. That’s the limit.
It took ten years before magazine moved into pistol handle and recoil spring wound around its barrel.
The Renault FT 17 of First World War was the first tank that looked like a tank, not like a small barn.
It had one revolving turret with one gun.
Its tracks were on sides of its hull
Its engine was behind
Its production cost was low
But its great success did not influence the shape of heavy tanks. They were mastodons on tracks before FT-17 and remained so after it. Only twenty years after heavy tanks began to take similar shape.
Conservators again? Dumb generals and engineers? No.
