Japanese way of dating by pineapplemonade

When foreigners have a problem in dating a Japanese is probably because of the Japanese way of dating. (A little disclaimer before going further though, I have no dating experience so this may not apply to everyone.)

The American way of dating:
You find a cute crush.
Ask his/her number.
Call and ask out for a date.
If you decide you like him/her, get serious.

Now, the Japanese way of dating:
You like someone.
You like that someone for a while.
Ask cell phone number/email address.
But not yet.. get friendly and build a nice impression.
And then you "confess your love." (kokuhaku)
If he/she says I like you too, then you are happily a couple.
Then you go on first date.
And second date, and so on.

Foreigners tend to skip the "confess your love" part which can really confuse the crush. How do you confess your love? Just say I like you. There is also no doing anything unless you actually do say the word.
