Still - I would give up all rivers and ponds of my childhood for a computer in age of eight.

There is nothing in my life at eight that I would trade for a computer, except attending the school - I would choose the lesser of two evils.

You'll have the computer for all your life, but no chance to get totally dirty in a river or pond without looking on the watch and thinking about responsibilities.

Well, reading all I want and playing games without responsibilities beats it for me :)

My kids spend a lot of time with computer, but the rare getting dirty in the pond makes them much, much happier. I see you are ready to trade, I am not sure 8-years-old you would agree with adult-you.

O, I think he would even at that age. But of course I am moved by the fact that I got my first PC-in-reach at like 20 or so...

The world has become a lot more dangerous in the past couple of decades.

It is rather complex, I think.

Should take into account lesser number of children in a family, lower chance of death from illness et cetera

Great-grandfather was probably one of 6-8 kids. That explains.

Exactly.

this is 100% dependent on where you live
when I was eight and living in moscow, I was allowed to the end of the block
when I was visiting my grandparents' in the country, I could walk anywhere I please
kids who live in small towns and villages have a lot more freedom, inversely proportional to the size of the place
so this difference in the pic is probably because what was a small village in 1911 grew into a big city 100 yrs later

and I bet nobody in his right mind would fish in that river now, unless it's to poison the rats with that fish
