During the War to end all Wars, German engineers smoke some grass (or was it opium then) and produced stratospheric сannons and war zeppelins. At the same time their British counterparts, being born in a seafaring nation, drowned their sorrows in a sea.
Behold - K class - steam powered submarines of World War One. With folding smoke funnels.
The idea idea was sound - a fleet action submarine, as opposed to commerce raider. But the technology just wasn't there. Using of well developed steam turbine of destroyer instead of badly developed diesel engine was also sound. On the paper.
Looks great, isn't it?
But real boat just had way too many holes. And way too little luck.
Наиболее "удачливый" номер 13 затонула на испытаниях унеся с собой три десятка человек - другая половина экипажа спаслась. Подняв ее перенумеровали в 22 но это мало помогло...
Замечательно, кстати, что вот этот памятник спасению с затонувшей подводной лодки поставлен не всемогущим государством, а частными лицами - одним из выживших и его женой.
