What made reporting so difficult from Beirut was the fact that there was no center - not politically, not physically; since there was no functioning unified government, there was no body which reporters could use to check out news stories and no authoritative version of reality to either accept or refute... Lebanon was carved up into a checkboard of fiefdoms and private armies, each with its own version of reality, which it broadcast through its own radio station and its own spokesmen.

Поскольку общего правительства не существовало, не было и официальной версий событий, которую репортеры могли бы потвердить или опровергнуть. Конечно, были. Но все равно все приходилось перепроверять и сравнивать.
