Woman rights in Saudi Arabia? I have no sympathy for men of this hostile, undeservedly rich, backward country – why should I care about women? Their women.

Ten years ago this approach was obvious to me. Now, well, now I am not quite sure.

Once, reading a mIcroeconomy textbook I found a sound advice. If you want to help mAcroeconomy - don't "buy Engilsh", buy the product that fits your needs best.

Wasting time and power for "understanding" an alien neighbor can only be justified if the neighbor is of same social rank. Otherwise understanding harms your own interests and fails to help the neighbor.

Colossal sums were spent to build colonial administration. But the alien infrastructure become useless when native people took it into their hands.

25 years Israel had colonial-type rule over Arab population in Iehuda, Shomron and Gaza. Providing infrastructure, job permits, medical services. Almost 10 years were wasted for collapsed "peace process". During those years PA built nothing but system of military control over population. Not ever independent infrastructure. But in a year of semi-separation, with all shooting, blockposts and curfews, palestinian inner politics made more progress than in all 30+ years before. Real faction emerged. Arafat clique dominance in FATH council is charged bow not by US backed opposition, but by local FATH members.

When Europe, Israel, USA were caught by urge to help Lebanon Christians - all that followed was civil war extension. Civil war stopped only after all foreign powerbrokers asked themselves a simple question - what do they win by meddling in the bog and dumped their Christian ally for good.

I suppose that if Saudis did human sacrifices at Kaaba, West should have had interfere. But in central Africa situation is very close to that and we just closing eyes, because civilization gap between West and Africa is wider then between West and Arabs.

Thats all. Sorry for long rant :)

That's actually pretty informative. Thanks.

I do find, in both personal interactions and national policies, that philosophy/ethics can be at odds with practical, material considerations. I believe it's better for my inner self to err on the side of compassion... but without my own survival, where is my inner self, hmmm?

It's a shifting, complex balance. Maybe we wouldn't even be here if we didn't have this to figure out...

well said :) And yes - the solution here is not an easy thing. Something out of non-binary ethics.
