"When it came time for Bob to study for his bar mitzvah a rabbi arrived by bus from NY".
"Bob had his bar mitzvah in May 1954".
What is bar mitzvah? Could you please explain?
Bar Mizvah
Date: 2004-06-07 08:39 am (UTC)Serious: bar mitzvah - (Judaism) an initiation ceremony marking the 13th birthday of a Jewish boy and signifying the beginning of religious responsibility; "a bar mitzvah is an important social event". Not religious - just responsibility. Before BM parents are responsible for boy's misdoings. Afterwards - all responsibility is his.
Content note: "studying for Bar Mitzva". At traditional BM on the Sabbath immediately following 13 birthday, boy is called upon to be one of the seven men who read that week's selection from the Torah. But in modern society (outside of Israel) where children can not read Hebrew (nor Aramaic) they "study" before BM - i.e. prepare themselves to parrot some chapter in original without any (or with very little) understanding :)
"A rabbi arriving by bus from NY" looks to me like special threatment.

> A rabbi arriving by bus from NY
It's simple. The fact is that Zimmermans (I mean, you know, young Bob Zimmerman, later known as Dylan, and his parents) lived at the time in Hibbing, a mining town in Minnesota. The population was mainly european emigrants, and Jewish community was very small, so small that they didn't even have a rabbi. The Zimmermans was a relatively wealthy family, so they could afford inviting a rabbi. I believe that other jewish boys also studied while the man was there; but after Bob's bar mitzvah he left back to NY.

Bar = son (ancient form, modern is "Ben")
Mitzvah = commandment, good deed, good religious deed, etc
So it can be translated like "son's good deed" but if you translate some text just write it as it sounds.

Date: 2004-06-07 01:11 pm (UTC)Mitzva, while in colloquial everyday Hebrew meaning 'good deed', is derived from the verb 'to command' - meaning, roughly, 'a commandment'.
Thus, Bar-Mitzva means 'one who is subject to the commandment', and is a name for the STATUS the boy becomes at his 13th birthday, ie. - he is now subject to most of the Hebrew religious law.
I think christian confirmation is something similar - but I'm not sure...
