A reasonable precaution to avoid accessory charges to a Ponzi scheme in case the virtual property market collapses.

Rather more direct collision with TOS of the most MMO providing companies.

Virtual property market collapse can happen at the moment only in the Second Life project where speculations are possible. But the bulk of the virtual property market is based on MMO formula where time is traded for advancement. And while it goes up and down it is quite immune to any speculative schemes.

That could be as well, but eBay is not in the business of enforcing them and has no obligations toward those companies; why would they bother prohibiting sales of virtual properties if that was the only problem? OTOH, selling "game play training services" would be much harder to suppress.
